Selected Accomplishments as a Biomedical Scientist:

Introduced the use of digital imaging and quantitative fluorescence microscopy to the study of arterial muscle cell physiology.

Led a successful research effort to develop a novel method with which to directly monitor calcium in separate intracellular compartments within individual living cells.

Served as a senior consultant to the chairman of the Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology at the Uppsala University School of Medicine, Uppsala, Sweden.

Chosen by Department of Veterans Affairs to lead a study to analyze the effects of aging on vascular muscle physiology; collaborated with researchers/investigators from National Institute of Health's Geriatric Research Center.

Collaborated with leading professionals in other fields, contributing expertise in the areas of intracellular signaling, digital imaging, and quantitative fluorescence microscopy. These include:

  • Virology: regulation of intracellular signaling associated with cytomegalovirus infection.
  • Neurophysiology: regulation of intracellular sodium and calcium in neurons and astrocytes.
  • Pulmonary Physiology: regulation of pulmonary vascular tone and the effects of hypoxia on calcium regulation and potassium channel activity.
  • Obstetrics & Gynecology: steroid-induced intracellular signaling and regulation of myometrial excitability.
